He was preceded in death by his parents and sister Judy Madison. Hal served in the U.S. Army in Korea. He was a graduate of Western Washington University (Bachelor's) where he played on the football team. His 38 year education career included teaching 6th grade in Bremerton, Principal in Cathlamet, Counselor and Principal in the Edmonds SD, Superintendent of Wenatchee Schools, and Deputy Superintendent in Renton SD. Hal was a gifted individual. He was an artist, a poet, an accomplished woodworker, golfer, gardener, and an avid reader of all genre. His greatest love, however, was fishing whether it was in Puget Sound or Lake Washington. His greatest joy was to be on the water at sunrise to see the sun come up and the fish nibble. Hal was a former member of the Renton Lion's Club (past president), the Edmonds Jaycees, and the Washington State School Superintendents Association. God bless you, Hal, and may you forever see the sun rise and the fish nibble. We want to especially thank Hal's medical team at Virginia Mason Medical Center, the wonderful people of the Franciscan Hospice team, and the kind team of caregivers from Home Instead. Per Hal's request, there will be no service. In lieu of flowers or memorials, please give a book to your favorite child and read with them no matter how old they are. Karen Kraatz (DeBruler)

My mom worked at the ESD administration center in bookkeeping.  She always told the story of how Dr.Kloes would start "hanging around and hovering over the books" near the end of each fiscal year to see which principals hadn't spent all their funds for their schools.  He would scoop up everything he could for Meadowdale from those untouched pots of gold.  He was looking to get everything he could that would benefit us!

Less than ten years later after I had started my teaching career in Renton, he was hired as the assistant superintendent.  As part of his introduction to the district, he toured all the schools.  When he came to Tiffany Park Elementary and saw me, he exclaimed, "Karen!  One of my star pupils!"  It embarrassed me at the time, but I look back at it fondly now. Thank you, Dr. Kloes, for being a part of my educational life as both a student and teacher.
