Winifred Parris (1/8/1920-4/11/2008)

On March 31, at her insistence, we moved my mother to a new residence. She said goodbye to her friends and departed.

Last night at 23:11, despite my raging and partially desperate efforts, in conjunction with medical professionals to prevent it, she departed altogether.

Mrs. Paris was one of those teachers who was pivotal in my life.  When I was booted from the Honors' Program at Edmonds Junior High, she really rescued me from being totally embarrassed and devastated.  She had a healing sense of humor.

I was so profoundly lucky to have had my life touched by her grace and talent.

Thanks, John.  It's good to hear this story about her compassion.  My strongest memory of Mrs. Paris was in French class at MHS.  She had us perform a short murder mystery, I believe during one of the lunch hours, i.e., to an audience who wasn't studying French.  We gestured a lot to convey meaning.  Karen Kraaz and Ray Ewing had major roles in this play; they were the last to stay alive.  As the bodies were piling up on top of each other, which was a lot of body contact with classmates, we tried not to even silently laugh since we were supposed to be seriously murdered.  Once someone started silently shaking with laughter,  we knew we would not be able to hold it back.  By the end of the play, everyone was laughing, including Mrs. Paris.  I wanted to speak French like she did and wear the suits she brought back from Paris.
