George Reid

George Reid

George A. Reid, Jr., passed away Friday, March 30, at Providence Hospital in Everett from heart failure. His obituary, reprinted from the memorial service program:

"George spent most of his years with family in Bellingham, Washington, where he worked for Whatcom County until he retired in 2009. He took pride in his time served in the Navy and was very involved with his Meadowdale High School Class of '65 Alumni.

"He is survived by his children: Mike (Keri) Schindler, Erin (Chris) Batten, and Sara; brothers Rob (Teri), Scott (Colleen), sister Bonnie (Tom), four grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

"George was an avid sports fan and could always strike up a conversation about his favorite teams - the Seahawks or the Mariners. George enjoyed muscle cars and, in his retirement, he had a lot of fun with the MOPAR club and his brothers showing his Plum Crazy Purple Dodge Challenger at car shows. George was very proud of his immediate and extended family and didn't miss many opportunities to share their accomplishmnets with friends. George was a prankster and a jokester, his sneaky expression and sinister laugh will be fondly remembered by all who knew him well."

George will be laid to rest with honors at Tahoma National Veterans Cemetery in Kent Washington. The family requests in Lieu of flowers that you consider donating to charities that George supported such as:
Operation Military Family Cares (www.OMFCares.org) Wounded Warriors, like organizations or the charity of your choice in his honor.

George was predeceased by partner, Nancy Jo (Pilon) Fong, a member of the MHS Class of '66.

I met George when we moved to the Meadowdale area just before we started the 7th grade at Mountlake  Terrace Junior High.  George lived 3 houses down the street & we spent just about every non-school moment running around in the woods behind our houses.  It was a great time to be a kid.  We were both tall for our age but so so skinny.  You wouldn't know it now...we grew up. We built wooden hydroplanes & raced up & down the street.  We played whiffle ball home run derby & tackle football & basketball in my back yard whenever we could get enough neighborhood kids to go at least 2 on 2.  We built underground & tree forts in the woods.  We had BB gun fights constantly & one bad day, I shot George in the skin just at the edge of his eye.  We stopped...for about a week, & then resumed.  In the summertime, we slept outside constantly, & looked up at the stars & told the latest "dirty jokes" we'd heard & wrestled, usually ending up doing finger pokes on the chest of the youngest in the group.  After High School, we went different ways & the next time I saw George was at the reunions.  After the 50th, George & I kept in touch by phone.  Dean MacDonald & I went to see George 2 days before his surgery, to give him "the pep talk", because both of us had undergone previous open heart surgeries.  He seemed really tired, but he did his best to talk with us for about an hour & then we could see he had reached his limit & needed to rest.  I'm so grateful that George & the others have worked so tirelessly to get us all back together again. It has been a real blessing.  I'm going to miss my longtime friend.

I didn't know George in high school but met during the Multi-Class Reunion Committee Meetings in 2013.  In 2015 I was invited to attend the MHS 1965 50th reunion committee meetings to help me with the planning of the MHS 1966 50th Reunion.  By that time George and Nancy were a couple since meeting at the 2013 Multi-Class Reunion.  George and Anne Mackie were a great help in getting the Class of 1966 50th Reunion on track in the right direction.  George and Nancy then attend the several of the Class of '66 reunion meeting until Nancy's health began to fail.  I would also see George and Nancy at the Deming Car Show at the Log Grounds and that is when we really had time to visit.  It was fun getting to know George and visit.  George and Nancy are now reunited and I look forward to when I get to see them again.
